Helping Companies Secure their Digital Future

From mainframes to PCs, organizations have traditionally set up their enterprise network infrastructure via a one-time capital expenditure on hardware, software, licenses, and services. However, with the advent of faster internet and affordable cloud infrastructure, ‘owning’ your network is no longer a requirement. In fact, spending on network infrastructure can become a liability that drains resources away from your core operations.

As Gen Z steps up to bat, PCs and laptops are giving way to cloud-first devices like tablets and smartphones—the bedrock of a fast-changing, app-enabled ecosystem. Enterprise networks must be as equally dynamic as their next-gen customer base if they wish to retain them.

Modern enterprises must have access to the latest in network and communications technology. Only then can they create the solutions that will click with their target customer base.

This is the promise of Verizon Business’ Network as a Service.

“It’s about delivering a secured network in a more flexible, agile, and consumable way, centered around the specific needs of our customers. Our clients are telling us they want to escape from the endless technology refresh cycles and maintenance of hardware they currently face and instead invest in a network that can be easily modified as required, ” Says Sanjiv Gossain, group vice president and head of EMEA at Verizon Business.

As a global leader with presence in 150 countries, Verizon Global Enterprise offers a broad portfolio of connectivity, security and professional services designed to enable their customers to optimize their business operations, mitigate business risks, and capitalize on data. The company serves 99 percent of the Fortune 500 companies, as well as non-U.S. public sector customers. With a rich history of excellence in the data and telecom space, Verizon Business is ideally positioned to roll out its range of network as a service (NaaS) offerings. The next-generation model can help organizations concentrate valuable resources on their business instead of rapidly changing networking technologies that require large capital investments. In doing so, they are playing a vital role in helping their customers evolve with the everchanging demands in the market without spending more on their network infrastructure.

Adapting Technologies to meet Dynamic Market Demands

In the traditional network and application service deployment environment, applications and services are not deployed in an integrated and centrally orchestrated manner. For businesses, this means:

• Higher capital costs, for specialty hardware for specific applications, such as a security firewall, IDS/IPS, routers, WAN optimization appliances, and SDWAN.

• Unsecured connectivity to cloud services; separate connections to scale, which are often done off the internet, leading to slower deployments of applications from development to production.

• Use of multiple vendors for contracts and procurement for applications, forcing customers to overpay for licenses and leading to longer contracting/procurement/engineering cycles.

All these factors affect a business’s ability to expand locations and reach new markets in an agile manner, opening the door for digitally native firms to disrupt and grab the market share.

Verizon’s solutions help customers reshape their connectivity infrastructure, which can reconcile application and customer experience needs with cutting-edge connectivity, to create a hybrid network environment.
Businesses will no longer need physical deployments and can move to a virtual and software-enabled service deployment model. Verizon can also integrate cloud services platforms into the network to help enterprises scale cloud services deployments in near real-time.

This helps deliver visibility into application services, not just for quality, but also into transactions, which are linked to customer experience.

Putting the Potential of 5G and MEC Within Reach

In terms of current network technologies, both 5G and Mobile Edge Networks are here, and they are here to stay.

As the first tech provider in the world to launch 5G, Verizon has been instrumental in enabling new 5G-powered experiences and opportunities to both businesses and consumers. Verizon is also a member of the 5G Future Forum, which enables it to work with other telcos to establish the groundwork for interoperable 5G cloud computing solutions the world.

In 2015, they created the 5G Technology Forum (5GTF), bringing together key partners like Ericsson, Qualcomm, Intel, and Samsung, to move the entire 5G ecosystem forward. The 5G Tech Forum’s technical work helped accelerate the release of the 3GPP 5G New Radio (NR) standard in December of 2017. This work set the foundation for the global 5G standard. 5G and network virtualization (using software to perform network functions) enables service and application deployment without having to install additional hardware.

"It’s about delivering a secured network in a more flexible, agile, and consumable way, centered around the specific needs of our customers. We are transitioning our customers from their traditional cycles of deploying hardware, applications, and services, to new, softwaredefined, and integrated digital environments"

Needless to say, Verizon has led the way in accelerating 5G innovation and industry standards.

In that same vein, Verizon is also focusing on private 5G, which has the potential to become the world's predominant LAN and WAN technology over the next 10 to 20 years, especially in greenfield builds. The next five years will likely see a boom in private 5G implementations at locations that would greatly benefit from better wireless technology in terms of speed, capacity, latency, and more. Deloitte predicts that by 2024, the value of cellular mobile equipment and services for use in private networks will likely add up to tens of billions of dollars annually.

The enterprise network of the future will be agile, automated and consumed as a service, enabling flexibility and new ways to interact with employees, partners, customers and things

Verizon’s private 5G solutions can enable businesses to get on the 5G ladder now, and the company will offer its support through every step of the way, providing architecture design to deployment and ongoing management. Each installation is custom-built to provide the coverage, reliability, and capacity that businesses need today, and tomorrow. Private 5G by Verizon is built with the core function of supporting edge computing.

“We can deliver ultra-fast private wireless connectivity and high bandwidth, provide near real-time and low-latency connections to enable businesses to transform the way they are working, with improved efficiency, innovation and security,” says Gossain.

It comes as no surprise then, that Verizon is also the first company in the world to launch a mobile edge compute service (MEC), partnering with all three major cloud providers—Google Cloud, AWS and Azure—to bring the capacity and power of the cloud to the edge of the network. This will enable developers and businesses to build new latency-sensitive applications.
With the evolution of the cloud, MEC brings application hosting from centralized data centers down to the network edge, closer to the end user. As MEC is located on the edge network, it enables latency as low as 10 to 20 ms instead of requiring data to be processed in the core cloud data centers. Developers can use the same familiar cloud platform services and tools on the MEC platform, such as computers, networking, storage, and horizontal services.

In collaboration with AWS, Verizon’s private 5G network and MEC platform, with AWS Outposts, will allow customers to deploy secure, dedicated edge infrastructure on-premise to support applications ranging from factory automation to intelligent logistics and predictive maintenance.

Taking the Industry Forward, One Node at a Time

Verizon Business has been working with Associated British Ports (ABP) to deploy private 5G at the Port of Southampton. The UK’s number one port, responsible for £40 billion in exports every year, the Port of Southampton provides a critical link in supply chains serving businesses and manufacturers throughout the nation. It is also the UK’s number one port for car and cruise ships, handling approximately 900,000 cars and welcoming millions of cruise passengers annually. With this new contract, it will become the first UK mainland port with access to a private 5G network.

Delivered in partnership with Nokia, the Verizon private 5G platform will provide ABP with a reliable and secure private wireless data network across selected areas within the East and West Docks of the Southampton Port.

This will enable data communications to be consolidated onto a single network, reducing complexity, as well as improving the reliability and security of terminal communications. The deployment will address the immediate problem of loss of onsite data communications caused by poor Wi-Fi connectivity while the advanced capabilities of private 5G, specifically its reliability, throughput, security, and ultra-low latency will enable the use of new technologies such as real-time analytics, the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine learning.

This will aid in the enablement of new services in the near future, including asset tracking, autonomous guided vehicles, workflow management, predictive maintenance, and safety monitoring.

Business Transformation and the Trajectory of Verizon’s Innovation

Verizon currently owns and operates one of the largest global fiber-optic networks in the world, providing connectivity to its business customers in more than 150 countries. The company’s global IP network includes long-haul, metro and submarine assets that carry IP, data, and voice traffic across more than one million miles, enabling more than 330,000 private IP connections. They offer a suite of management and data security services that help their customers protect, detect, and respond to security threats to their networks, data, applications, and infrastructure. Through its Advanced Security Operations Center (SOC), Verizon monitors over 61 billion security events globally every year.

Verizon’s investigative response team boasts several hundred full-time team members across the globe and is one of the largest non-military IT investigations companies in the world. Verizon conducted 500+ IT investigations in 2022 and was retained to investigate 9 of the 11 largest data breaches on record.

On the collaboration front, BlueJeans by Verizon empowers organizations with secure video collaboration and large interactive events for today’s hybrid ways of working. It has numerous referenceable customers, such as Adobe, Red Hat, Electrolux, Dolby, UPenn—Wharton, and Central London Community Healthcare NHS.

With their dominance in 5G, MEC, security, and now, collaboration, Verizon Business has positioned itself as the one-stop, next-gen networking shop for organizations looking to take their businesses into the future. With both cutting-edge tech and a stellar vision for the future, it is on the path to enabling real change.

How Value Stream Management is fueling success at Boeing, Tyson, and Verizon

Unlocking business agility with Value Stream Management—now is the time to break down the silos that can impede successful digital transformation.

In today’s digitally transforming world, time is of the essence. Whether you’re looking to deliver a new product release, fix an issue, or enhance a service, the longer you make customers wait, the worse for your business.

As you seek to boost agility and speed your organization’s digital transformation, there are some proven principles you can apply. By employing Value Stream Management (VSM), executives gain the visibility to align teams, workflows, and investments around one key aspect: customer value. In the process, they can break down the silos that stifle digital transformation. Around the world, leading enterprises have begun to harness the power of VSM—and have seen dramatic results. The following are a few real-world examples of the gains leading companies are realizing.

The Boeing Company

The Boeing Company has been employing VSM for several years now. Through VSM, they optimized resource utilization and reduced waste.

“Before we adopted value stream management and our sophisticated processes, we actually had no idea what work was being done in each of our organizations,” Lynda Van Vleet, Boeing’s portfolio management systems product manager.

The organization changed legacy approaches to product management and project investment. This enabled them to speed up their ability to innovate and pursue digital transformation. They created cross-functional teams that empowered employees to spend more time and effort on delivering customer value. By establishing cross-team visibility, leaders were able to spot redundancies.

“In our first two years, we saved hundreds of millions of dollars. But that wasn’t our goal. I think a lot of organizations look at this as a way of saving money because you usually do, but if you start out looking at it as a way of creating value, that just comes along with it.”

Tyson Foods

The IT team at Tyson adopted a portfolio-style management approach with VSM that deepened management’s insight and visibility into spending, available resources, and how various investments create customer value.

Through VSM, teams are able to get the deeper insight required to improve project governance and use resources more efficiently. “We have more visibility into metrics that matter in terms of how we work and use our people,” revealed Chelsey Marr, senior director of the Tyson Technology Program Management Office. “It’s easy to see constraints from competing priorities.” In addition, managers have gained a sharper “line of sight into what will be delivered, who will deliver, and how the results will be delivered.”

Verizon

A multinational telecommunications company, Verizon offers another example of the power of VSM. Verizon’s telecommunications products and services were growing so fast that management felt it needed new methods to manage the increased volume of work. “We’re in a data-intensive tech field that moves faster than a project plan or traditional roadmaps,” said Jason Newman, senior manager, systems engineering, Connected Solutions Group strategy and operations at Verizon. “Value stream management lets people do the work they’re supposed to do instead of getting caught up in work about work.”

Verizon saw the immediate value of heightening process visibility and improving real business intelligence. Newman’s team leverages the VSM platform’s intelligence to “consume data and help contribute to decision-making.”

“Just the efficiencies gained from governing and staffing provided cost savings,” claimed Newman. “What you see is maximizing the ROI.”

Conclusion

By employing VSM principles and solutions, businesses around the world are realizing significant dividends. To learn more about VSM and how it is fueling these benefits, be sure to review these two reports from Harvard Business Review Analytic Services:

• “Using Value Stream Management to Speed Digital Transformation and Eliminate the Silos”

• “Entering the Age of Data-Driven Digital Transformation with Value Stream Management”

These reports feature the insights of industry analysts and expert VSM practitioners, who share some of the key strategies they’ve employed. You can also visit ValueOps by Broadcom to learn more about VSM’s benefits and how to get started.
