The Newest Military in the Sky

Many countries are looking to embrace new technological innovations to improve the tactical readiness of their armed forces in modern warfare. One such recent innovation that stirred a lot of interest in the defence industry is the military-grade unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or combat drones, which can surveil or attack an enemy in stealth mode. Leading the innovation in drone technologies is the indigenous Turkish defence contractor STM—Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik ve Ticaret A.Ş.

STM unveiled a broad range of enhanced Kamikaze drone systems with increased ammo capacity and improved shooting in the recently held International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF). The line of Kamikaze drones includes KARGU and ALPAGU. While the former is a multi-rotor UAV, the latter is a fixed-wing UAV. “Our upgraded kamikaze drones, ALPAGU and KARGU, are a shot in the arm for the Turkish military which can now surprise its enemies with immense lethality,” says Ömer Korkut, CTO of STM.

Alongside the kamikaze drones, STM has also developed TOGAN, a mini reconnaissance drone that can work together with ALPAGU and KARGU to provide additional assistance to combatants in the battlefield.

Built from the ground up using the latest and greatest technologies, these drones are driven by artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, computer vision, and cutting-edge RF and simulation systems.

These innovations prove to be another feather in the cap of STM, an organization that was founded in 1991. STM was established to provide the Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and under secretariat for Defence Industries with systems engineering, technical support, project management, technology, and logistics support services. Today, the company offers engineering, technology, and consultancy services with the help and guidance of the Presidency of Defence Industries to meet the needs of Turkey and its allied nations. “Technologies we develop using indigenous capabilities are crucial to Turkey’s security,” says Korkut.
