Fremont, CA: Modern mobile communications need removable subscriber identification module (SIM) cards. Embedded counterparts would gradually replace these small plastic cards due to technical advances.
It's interesting to note that the SIM card has been around for a long time, but it now seems to be on its way out. The electronic version (eSIM), a much more intelligent technology, has arrived to save the day.

Although removable SIM cards will continue to be the most common method of allowing mobile communication in markets in the short-to-medium term, the eSIM technology, supported by the GSM Association (GSMA) and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) standardization and specification work, is projected to become more widely adopted over time due to its intrinsic benefits.
Generally, a SIM provides information that allows a carrier to verify a subscriber's identity. That is, the SIM card is what informs a carrier that a customer is who he or she claims to be; without it, carriers will have no way of knowing whether or not a customer is subscribed to their network, and therefore would not allow them to use their cell towers.

If a customer wants to switch carriers at home, he'll need to replace his SIM card as well. One of the benefits of eSIM technology is that it makes switching carriers much simpler. Rather than ordering a new SIM and waiting for it to arrive, a customer can change carriers directly from their phone. If he has a dual-SIM phone, eSIM technology allows him to have multiple accounts and switch between them quickly.
