The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant disruption: many businesses have closed, and employees have begun working remotely. The transformation has been so profound that organizations can no longer return to their pre-crisis state.
Fremont, CA: Enterprise must reinvent themselves for a new normal as they prepare to exit the crisis. Here are some of the post-COVID predictions and their implications for enterprise architecture.

Because of the COVID-19 crisis, most business transactions are now conducted online, and employees work from home most of the time. As a result, the migration of applications to the cloud will continue faster than before the crisis
As an enterprise architect, you must be aware of the migration strategy used for each application. The strategy can be classified into several types, such as
- "Rehost" – also known as "lift-and-shift" – refers to the process of moving an application to the cloud without re-architecting it, or
- "Refactor," which entails re-architecting the application to take advantage of cloud-native features.
It is easier to rank these applications and determine the best cloud solution when you thoroughly understand their business value and criticality.
As an architect, you also understand all of an application's dependencies and how an application is supported by underlying technology components, which facilitates decision-making and execution of the cloud migration.
Business digitization will pick up speed
Organizations must accelerate their digitization efforts now that more and more transactions are being conducted online. This entails rethinking the customer experience, specifically the customer journey.
As an enterprise architect, you must communicate with business leaders and learn about the new customer journeys they want to implement. In a customer journey map, mapping customer touchpoints to business capabilities provides a better view of the impacted business capabilities and even identifies emerging capabilities. You can build strategic initiatives that focus on the capabilities that provide the most value to both the customer and the organization by evaluating these capabilities against parameters such as complexity, performance, and criticality.
Agile will be assumed
According to McKinsey, in the post-COVID era, the need for speed will be greater than ever. Organizations will need to accelerate decision-making by leveraging technology and data to delight customers and remove barriers to getting things done quickly and well. Transparency and continuous improvement will be the dominant values. Organizations will reorganize by-products to serve the customer better. Enterprise Architecture will shift from a top-down to a bottom-up approach while increasing collaboration with development teams in this new context. Enterprise Architects will assist development teams in understanding how software developments fit into the newly designed customer experience by mapping epics and user stories to business capabilities and, in turn, indirectly to customer journey maps and value streams.
