Fremont, CA: Furthermore, since processing payments has high fixed costs and low marginal costs, Fidelity National and Fiserv are able to deliver better pricing while maintaining healthy profit margins. As everyone knows, in addition to innovation, the commerce and banking industries are working hard to include a diverse range of payment methods, both online and in-store, that are tailored to the needs of their customers.
Although Deutsche Bank assumes that cash will continue, mobile payments will expand at a breakneck pace in the coming decade, reducing the use of plastic cards. In the next five years, mobile payments are projected to account for two-fifths of in-store transactions in the US, quadrupling the current amount. Consumers and companies all over the world benefit from mobile payments, which range from retailer-specific applications to wallets provided by financial institutions, smartphone makers, and technology platforms. About one billion shoppers will make a mobile purchase by 2020.
Other developing countries are expected to rise at a similar rate; however, different countries will experience different levels of cash and plastic card shrinkage. The effects could be felt much earlier in emerging markets. Many people in these countries are switching from cash to electronic payments without ever having used a credit card.
The Coronavirus Pandemic Accelerated the Use of Contactless Payment
The impact of COVID-19 on the payment card market is expected to be significant. Contactless is thought to be the more hygienic and safer form of payment. Players in the commerce environment are reinforcing this trend by claiming that contactless transactions improve safety and health as compared to pre-COVID-19 projections. Contactless adoption is expected to rise by 6 percent to 8 percent globally, with an additional 110 million contactless payment cards expected to be released in 2020.
Furthermore, Mastercard's global transaction data and market studies indicate that the use of contactless payments is rapidly increasing. According to a recent survey, the number of contactless card payments at supermarkets, groceries, as well as pharmacies during the March 2020 lockdown rose by 25 percent compared to the previous year as a percentage of all face-to-face card payments. Tap-and-go payments are now used by 79 percent of people worldwide and 91 percent in the Asia Pacific, citing protection and cleanliness as reasons. The findings support how people search out alternatives in stores, choosing to avoid dealing with cash, pens, and keypads in favor of a secure and fast tap to check out.
