Over the last decade, the modern data stack has grown more comprehensive than ever imagined.
FREMONT, CA:The contemporary data stack has developed more than ever dreamed during the past ten years. Businesses have platforms like data lakes, warehouses, business intelligence tools, and others that enable the deployment of structured and unstructured datasets and extract value from them.
However, most data users still prefer Excel when it comes to analytics. Although the surface area from which data analysts and other businesspeople operate is enriched by the specialised gear currently on the market, spreadsheets' simplicity is still lacking. Excel provides the best working environment for data, but the programme is 40 years old and wasn't designed with today's databases or workflows in mind.

Equals’ Much-needed Spreadsheet Upgrade
California-based Equals provides a system that functions much like a spreadsheet but has built-in connectivity to business databases, versioning, and collaboration to fill this gap without sacrificing simplicity. Andreessen Horowitz led a USD 16 million Series A fundraising round for the startup today.
Excel is their opponent. There isn't another firm developing a comprehensive spreadsheet targeted at Excel's two main use cases: analysis and financial modelling. According to the CEO and co-founder of Equals, many people are nibbling at the edges of Excel, for example, airtable, the spreadsheet-as-a-database; or smart sheets, Asana, etc., the spreadsheet-as-a-project-management tool.
Users can immediately access their company's data warehouse to link a database of their choosing when utilising Equals' next-generation spreadsheet. They can then utilise a visual editor or execute SQL queries to quickly analyse the associated data inside the spreadsheet. Additionally, the service includes live data pulls and query scheduling features, enabling automatic data updates. Most significantly, all of these functions have the same Excel features. The sum function can join two columns and produce the total engagement value for each day in a third column, for example, if an analyst has gathered day-by-day digital engagement data from two sources.
Verticalized tools and bandage solutions to Excel have dominated the last few years but faced a strategy in this field. And even though Excel and Sheets are still often used by organisations, horizontal platforms are making a comeback, and Equals is in a prime position to be the ground-breaking business that modernises the spreadsheet. There is no better team than Equals to take on Excel since it requires enormous ambition.
The business has seen adoption from thousands of customers since its introduction in 2021, including Notion, Zeta, and Levity.
With the money from this round of fundraising, in which Craft Ventures, Box Group, Worklife, and Combine also participated, Equals intends to expand its R&D staff and make its platform available to everyone as a freemium service. For roughly USD 18 per month per editor, the platform's subscription plan provides connectivity to Postgres, Snowflake, Google Analytics, Salesforce, Amazon Redshift, and other services. The only way to get custom integrations is to purchase the enterprise plan, which is made to meet the demands of a particular business.
