Artificial intelligence (AI) applications are used in a variety of ways in automotive assembly areas and production lines. New generations of intelligent robots, human-machine interaction, and advanced quality assurance methods are among them.
Fremont, CA: Automobile manufacturers began reinventing themselves as digital companies a few years ago, but now that they are emerging from the business trauma of the pandemic, the need to complete the digitalization journey is much more pressing than ever. They won't have a choice as more technologically savvy competitors adopt and implement digital twin-enabled production systems and advance with connected vehicle services, electric vehicles (EVs), and, eventually, autonomous vehicles. Car manufacturers will make difficult decisions to bring software development in-house. Some will even begin developing their own vehicle-specific operating systems and computer processors or collaborate with some chip makers to develop next-generation operating systems and chips to run onboard systems for future generations of autonomous vehicles.

While AI is widely used in vehicle design, automakers are also incorporating AI and machine learning (ML) into their manufacturing processes. Robotics in assembly lines is not a new concept; it has been used for decades. However, these were caged robots that operated in strictly defined spaces and did not allow any human intrusion for safety reasons. With artificial intelligence, smart, collaborative robots can collaborate with their human counterparts in a shared assembly environment. Collaborative robots use artificial intelligence (AI) to detect as well as sense what human workers are doing and adjust their motions to avoid injuring their human coworkers. When AI algorithms are used to power painting and welding robots, they can do more than just follow a pre-programmed routine. AI enables them to detect defects or irregularities in materials and components and adjust the processor issue quality assurance alerts as needed.
The Emergence of Additive Manufacturing for Production Parts
Using 3D printing to fabricate production parts is now an established part of automotive production, and this industry ranks second only to aerospace and defense in terms of production additive manufacturing (AM). Most vehicles manufactured today incorporate a wide range of AM-fabricated parts into the overall assembly. This includes engine components, gears, gearboxes, brake components, headlamps, fuel tanks, body kits, bumpers, grilles, and fenders, as well as frame construction. Some automakers are even printing entire bodies for small electric vehicles.
