The data regulation conformance journey of telecoms should involve a judicious mixture of top-down and bottom-up approaches.
FREMONT, CA: Data privacy regulations are coming into force across the European Union. Harmonising all legislations into a single continent-wide directive, data regulations like GDPR marks the biggest overhaul of data privacy laws. With data regulations kicked in, companies that service customers have to take appropriate technical and organisational measures to ensure regulatory compliance. The telecom industry has no different story to share in this regard.
Data regulations will impact consumer-facing industries, forcing them to alter their business processes, revamp governance mechanisms, and even diversify revenue streams. The ramifications for the telecom industry will be significant, given that sensitive customer data form the backbone of its core operations. With the network breaches increasing in the digital age, telecoms will have to reimagine the way they collect, store, and analyse customer data in the post-regulation landscape. As regulations being enacted, it will hinder the operations of network operators from monetising client data for unearthing new revenue streams.

In order to ensure full compliance ahead of the data regulatory law deadline, telecom companies must comprehensively re-examine their business and operation support systems and data management practices. Carriers will need to completely erase any Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of an individual subscriber if the customer wishes so. Accordingly, telecoms will have to stay on top of their internal data warehouses, business operations, reporting structures, and all of their third-party service providers worldwide. As encrypting and anonymising all used data assumes critical importance, telcos must also extensively test their front-end, online applications to minimise the risk of data breaches.
Data regulations will undoubtedly trigger extensive changes across the telecom landscape. It will require extensive planning, regular impact assessment and adoption of new procedures. It is, therefore, critical to have a carefully weaved flexible compliance strategy. Data deluge only set to grow further, and regulatory compliance will help telecoms prepare.
