FREMONT, CA: Over time, the cry to save the world from deteriorating climate conditions has grown louder. Unfortunately, the planet was suffocated by the second wave of the pandemic in 2021, exposing human society to the negative effects of environmental collapse. Yes, climate change is to blame for everything from heavy rains in China and Europe to Haiti's earthquake and cyclone back-to-back. Not to mention the recent wildfires in the United States. Researchers, on the other hand, are looking for technical help to address the mounting climate issues. Robots now assist environmental experts in regulating conditions, particularly those in coastal environments.

Victoria Preston, an MIT-WHOI PhD student, has joined the endeavor to use robots in maritime monitoring to avoid environmental collapse. To keep an eye on the water, she and her colleagues constructed a robot that navigates the sites independently, gather samples, takes measurements, and so on. The robot can even detect the composition of flowing water thanks to its chemical sensors.
Victoria has been working on robots that can serve society since she was in elementary school. She frequently saw robots as a tool that scientists could use to help them manage the state of the environment. Victoria devised methods that could enable robots to move independently. As a result, they will be able to explore the seas and collect samples in areas of interest to scientists. The algorithm will be modified on a regular basis in order for the robot to explore new areas and collect more samples. They even obtain random samples, which are later tested in the lab.
Victoria's next step is to venture underwater, but this time with the help of her robots. Her research team will release remotely operated and autonomous underwater robots at the basin's bottom to explore how hydrothermal plumes flow in the water column.
