Sorting out traffic woes is one of the best ways to overcome air pollution and contribute to sustainable smart cities.
FREMONT, CA: Containing air pollution is one of the biggest priorities for cities looking to achieve sustainability. Cities that are now evolving into smart cities are undertaking the task with a combination of technological interventions and innovative strategies. In Europe, efforts for tackling air pollution have also involved traffic management. Given that emission from vehicles is a major contributor to air pollution, better management is expected to be an effective measure. In recent years, vehicle efficiencies across Europe have improved, and fuel quality has also become better. Despite that, road transport emissions have shown risen owing to increased mobility.
By facilitating traffic and preventing unnecessary snarls, it is possible to reduce the time vehicles spend on the road and thus reduce emissions. This is the idea that can be leveraged to make the city air cleaner. Strasbourg, a city in France, is a case in point. The city has deployed an intelligent traffic management system that uses advanced simulation technology. With the simulation, signal controls at intersections and arterial roads have been optimised to reduce unnecessary waiting time for vehicles. Reports have mentioned that such a system could help the city reduce vehicular emissions and particulate matter by almost 8 per cent.

As long as traffic keeps flowing, cities can not only elevate travel efficiency but also improve air quality. Doing it the smart way makes the job easier. Just like Strasbourg, other smart cities can evolve traffic management methods and make signals adaptive using sophisticated software and advanced imaging. Apart from that, digital replicas of cities are also being considered a valuable addition to traffic management. Smart cities in Europe are already making strategies data-centric. With data and simulations at the core, traffic management is bound to become intelligent enough to bring down traffic stagnations. Consequently, the fumes from vehicles will dip and result in healthier air.
