Taking steps towards energy efficiency is becoming the norm as European data centres undergo technological transitions.
FREMONT, CA: Every industry is today being assessed from the perspective of sustainability and environmental friendliness. Data centres in Europe, many of which are evolving from legacy to modern systems, are also subject to these assessments. Needless to say, numerous efforts and innovations are deemed necessary to convert inefficient data centres into energy-efficient entities. This following list reviews some of the ways in which European data centre operators are taking charge and making energy efficiency a reality for the indispensable technological facilities across the region.
• Using Enhanced ICT Equipment

By enhancing the properties of ICT equipment, data centre facilities in Europe are expanding the ambient range of temperature and humidity. Previously, the ICT equipment required a much narrower limit of temperature and humidity in which it could operate optimally. Owing to the use of advanced capabilities and controls in ICT, data centres are now able to run at higher temperatures, reducing the need for airflow. Thus, the energy usage is reducing, resulting in better Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE).
• Introducing High-Efficiency Cooling
Optimising cooling systems is vital to make data centres energy efficient. Cooling systems are the biggest power consumers in a data center after the ICT systems. Replacing legacy cooling apparatus with modernised systems is one of the ways in which Europe is driving up energy efficiency in its data centres. Today, water-side economisation systems can be deployed with a minimum amount of modification in existing cooling infrastructure. Apart from that, cooling systems that can be scaled flexibly are finding their way into European data centres.
• Innovative Aisle Containment Solutions
Aisle containment solutions have become a norm in European data centres. With appropriate airflow management systems, it is possible to overcome the challenges associated with increasing power densities in ICT racks. In addition to that, the sealing of openings by installing panels are also helping reduce unnecessary power consumption.
There are significant opportunities for optimising energy usage in data centres. The right measures, taken at the right time, enable data centre operators to welcome energy efficiency.
