FREMONT, CA: 2021 will demonstrate the true power of distributed computing, with major processing taking place not on centralized servers in the cloud but on the "edge" of the network, where most of the data everyone relies on is generated. Among them, IoT devices – from smartphones and smartwatches to tiny computers embedded in machines and infrastructure – produce vast quantities of data. This is stored in the cloud, with the related data sent back to the computer and instructed how to respond. But latency – the time it takes for data to move between two points on the internet – renders this set-up inefficient for time-critical applications such as those used by medical devices that need to process and respond to sensor data almost instantaneously. In 2021, companies will use edge computing to overcome these problems by relocating data processing from the central server to geographically closer to where it was obtained. They will be able to do this thanks to specialized accelerator chipsets built by companies such as Nvidia and Intel, which are capable of running relatively sophisticated machine learning algorithms far from the powerful centralized servers of the conventional cloud, and sometimes even on the system itself. This is going to reduce latency to almost zero. Companies are also developing software and hardware optimization strategies, such as model quantization, which will speed up cloud-based processing and further minimize latency. Advances like this will help spread the world's advanced IoT gadgets.
