The digital health sector is booming as tech giants like Apple, Google and Amazon are openly moving into it with plans to disrupt it. The HIMSS Europe & Health 2.0 Conference will address the hottest topics in this field: patient empowerment, the power of data, digital transformation of healthcare systems, digital therapies, blockchain, artificial intelligence, genomic data and precision medicine, telemedicine and much more. The sessions will be divided between keynotes and interactive workshops in which participants will design solutions for their work centres.
The HIMSS Europe & Health 2.0 Conference will take place on 27 – 29 May in Sitges (Barcelona) and it is expected to be the biggest digital health event in Europe of the year. The event is organised by HIMSS Europe, a non-for-profit organisation that drives innovation at a global level, and Health 2.0, a platform that drives the start-up ecosystem which was acquired by HIMSS last year. In addition, the conference is supported by the invaluable input of the Dutch Ministry for Health, Welfare and Sports.

Erik Gerritsen, General State Secretary of the Dutch Ministry, said: “We are very excited to be part of the most action-driven digital health conference of this year in Europe. The Dutch Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport has partnered with HIMSS Europe to craft an international event that will have a real lasting impact on the Dutch and international digital health ecosystem. In Sitges, we will show what it means to bring health and care from the hospital to the patient’s home, focusing on making cold technology work to deliver warm care. We invite everyone to participate and become part of scaling up working solutions and to go from talk to meaningful action.”
Digital Doctor, Patients Included and digital transformation of the NHS
Among the innovators that will speak at HIMSS Europe & Health 2.0 Conference is Dr Robert Wachter, best known as “Digital Doctor”, and Professor and Chair at the Department of Medicine at UCFC. Wachter has been ranked as one of the most influential physicians in the US by Modern Healthcare magazine. His book The Digital Doctor: Hope, Hype and Harm at the Dawn of Medicine’s Computer Age is a New York Times science bestseller.
Helen Bevan, Chief Transformation Officer at the NHS, will explain how she leads the digital transformation in this organisation. Bevan is the Director of Horizons, a group of professionals inside the NHS that pushes for change and innovation to transform the system.
Dr Lucien Engelen, Director of Radboud REshape Innovation Center, will be the master of ceremonies. Dr Engelen coined the concept “Patients Included”, which distinguishes healthcare initiatives that include the patients’ view. Today #PatientsIncluded is one of the most popular hashtags in healthcare’s social media. At Radboud, Engelen and his team do research on the convergence of technology and patient empowerment.
Other confirmed speakers include Hal Wolf, President CEO at HIMSS; Eugene Borukhovich, Global Head of Digital Health at Bayer; Indu Subaya, Vice President at HIMSS and Health 2.0; Eric Gerritsen, Secretary General at Ministry of Health in the Netherlands; Jorge González, Director at TIC Biomed, a platform to promote innovation within the healthcare sector.
Two worlds under one event
Pascal Lardier, Editorial Director at HIMSS Europe & Health 2.0 summarises the spirit of the conference: "The HIMSS Europe 18 & Health 2.0 Conference is really going to become the one annual appointment for the digital health community in Europe. For the first time, two different ecosystems will be interacting and engaging in a conversation around digital health. The HIMSS community gravitates around hospitals and healthcare systems while Health 2.0. is a grassroot movement with a great startup scene. These two worlds need to engage in a deeper conversation to advance towards the common goal of the digitisation of healthcare."
The conference will include an exhibition with country pavilions and innovative digital health solutions.
