A new addition to its capabilities is emerging, one that holds significant promise for saving lives. Experts suggest that artificial intelligence can predict the likelihood of breast cancer spreading, offering a crucial opportunity for intervention.
Researchers have devised a system that assesses the risk of cancer metastasis based on the armpit lymph nodes. This innovation can be utilised during the early stages of the disease, specifically for women with triple-negative breast cancer, which accounts for approximately 8,000 cases annually in the UK. By comparing a patient's lymph nodes to those of previous individuals, AI can accurately predict the progression of cancer. Consequently, individuals deemed to be at high risk can receive more aggressive treatment, while those at low risk may take preventive measures against the disease.

Dr Anita Grigoriadis, the lead researcher at the Breast Cancer Now Unit at King's College London, emphasised the significance of their study. She stated that by demonstrating the ability of lymph node changes to predict the spread of triple-negative breast cancer, they have advanced their understanding of the crucial role played by the immune response in determining a patient's prognosis.
The team has successfully transformed these findings from microscopic observations into a deep-learning framework, thereby creating an AI model that could potentially aid doctors in treating and caring for patients. This model serves as an additional tool in their arsenal for combating secondary breast cancer, which refers to the return and spread of tumours after treatment and is currently incurable. In the UK alone, over 60,000 women live with this condition and manage it through long-term medication. To validate her AI model, Dr Grigoriadis conducted tests on more than 5,000 lymph nodes generously donated by 345 real breast cancer patients.
