The Two Main Challenges in CloudOps:
Increasing Complexity
For starters, complexity slows or completely halts cloud-based workload deployments and operations. This is known colloquially as the "complexity wall." This is the result of a rapid shift to public cloud providers, including multicolored, over the last several years.
The issue is that most movements occurred without regard for the use of common services such as security and monitoring systems. Everyone bought whatever they thought was the best-of-breed for their solution. As a result, the number of technological stakes has grown to the point where no enterprise can afford the number of skills and tooling required to operate these systems. In other words, the level of complexity made them too expensive and risky to operate in their current form.
Not Having Proper Planning
Second, prior to migrations and development, CloudOps should have specific plans in place. The typical enterprise migrates to the cloud with no idea how it will operate those applications or manage the data once there. A lack of planning also leads to an increase in complexity as a result of a lack of ongoing coordination.
A simple part of the solution is to include cloud planning as part of the process of moving to or building on the cloud. One must also develop standard operating procedures and design net-new and migrated systems in ways that result in improved operations. This entails creating bespoke CloudOps management APIs that include more self-reporting data from cloud-based systems.
