EC COMPLIANCE
Streamlining Export Control Operations With Smarter Compliance Software

Marc Zarnowiecki, CEOEC COMPLIANCE’s transformative approach to export control is guided by this ideology. Founded by Marc Zarnowiecki and Frank Prabel, the company was born out of firsthand experiences with outdated and inefficient processes that made an already complex job even harder.
As the former head of export control at Airbus Helicopters, Zarnowiecki was managing hundreds of export licenses annually, tracking sensitive defence articles and navigating third-party compliance checks across multiple jurisdictions with Excel spreadsheets and fragmented information. He and Prabel, CTO with years of experience at Apple and SAP, and Technical Director of EC Compliance, recognised how technology could turn a siloed system into a seamless, automated workflow. Support from Airbus BizLab soon turned their idea into a working prototype.
The result was EC Manager, a cloud-based export control software suite designed to bring simplicity, clarity and operational relevance to a complex field.
The vast Airbus ecosystem, spanning multiple countries and divisions with over 130,000 employees and regulatory transactions, provided the perfect testing ground for our software,” explains Zarnowiecki, CEO. “It enabled us to understand exactly what export managers need and build those into the core functionalities of EC Manager.
The five smartly designed modules of EC Manager, now considered a standard process, break down the export control manager’s workflow into logical, actionable steps—determining classification, assessing exportability, conducting screening, securing licensing and managing reporting.
The software has completely reimagined the export control operations landscape, ushering in an era of digital efficiency and connectivity. Export managers confidently navigate regulations, access expert guidance, and ensure that every decision and workflow is fully documented. EC Manager’s intuitive, user-friendly interface offers seamless collaboration and makes compliance a shared responsibility across roles and functions within an organisation.
Code It, Screen It, Export It
The five smartly designed modules of EC Manager, now considered a gold standard, break down the export control manager’s workflow into logical, actionable steps—determining classification, assessing exportability, conducting screening, securing licensing and managing reporting. Each module is built to untangle complexity, ensuring export managers make informed and compliant decisions every step of the way.
Whether dealing with physical products or intangible assets like data, the Classification Module helps clients pinpoint which regulations apply—local or international. Its precision stems from an intelligent algorithm that combines industry-specific terminology, synonyms and up-to-date regulatory texts, enabling users to quickly classify items. It provides clients with a transparent, clause-specific breakdown of regulatory requirements along with a comprehensive checklist of the necessary documentation for export license applications. What previously took a week to classify and verify is now completed in minutes.
Supported by crawlers that automatically update regulatory texts, the module assures users always work with the current information. A user-friendly design featuring a reliable search engine and multi-column display further elevates the look and feel, giving clients a single window view for classifications across multiple regulations and languages.
The Exportability Module eliminates the uncertainty around regulations governing the export destination. For instance, a standard drone and a drone equipped with a night vision camera will have different classifications and, therefore, not the same level of exportability. This module quickly flags the differences. It offers a clear, colour-coded view of whether an export is allowed or restricted, eliminating ambiguity.
Meanwhile, the Screening Module ensures thorough vetting of third parties, whether entities or consignees.
The system’s clear signals guide users with precision:
• Green: Proceed confidently with a clear ‘go.’
• Orange: Requires additional authorisation, promoting caution.
• Red: Halt non-compliant exports and escalate for review
Even the most complex licensing requirements are simplified with the Licensing Module. From preparing documentation to submitting applications, this module automates the process, reducing delays while ensuring compliance. It also crosschecks whether a client’s existing license covers a specific export flow. The module’s well-organised license repository makes it easy for clients to quickly check if they have the right licenses for specific transactions, helping them make decisions faster and avoid last-minute surprises that could disrupt their export plans. Automatically tracking export limits, goods usage, license expiration dates and shipment schedules gives clients a clear picture of where they stand at all times. Reminders assure renewals are never overlooked, further supporting seamless operations.
Finally, the Reporting Module transforms transparency into a business advantage. Every export is documented, detailing origin, consignee and destination, creating a clear, traceable log of actions. The comprehensive compliance files stand as irrefutable evidence during audits, defending the position taken and, where appropriate, demonstrating that the decision was lawful and informed. Real-time reporting further enhances responsiveness to regulatory inquiries, building trust with authorities while maintaining operational continuity. This usually requires a heavy administrative follow-up, for which the module provides a concrete and reliable solution.
Stepping Up in Times of Need
Export control issues can escalate quickly, as one client learned during a critical crisis. A non-compliant export had nearly slipped through their system. Seeking EC Compliance’s help, they narrowly avoided a costly mistake.
With the power of EC Manager, the client’s export control processes were completely restructured. Key workflows were automated, minimising human error in vetting the exports against regulatory requirements.
One game-changing benefit was reducing reliance on a single expert. Previously, operations came to a halt whenever the lead export manager was unavailable. With EC Manager’s intuitive interface, deputy staff could easily step in to manage exports without disruption.
”The vast Airbus ecosystem, spanning multiple countries and divisions with over 130,000 employees and regulatory transactions, provided the perfect testing ground for our software. It enabled us to understand exactly what export managers need and build those into the core functionalities of EC Manager”
The client expressed relief and appreciation for two transformative outcomes. Its operations achieved full compliance, significantly reducing the risk of future regulatory violations and it gained the flexibility and resilience to maintain uninterrupted exports, regardless of individual staff availability.
Building a Community of Compliance Champions
Tapping into the collective wisdom of seasoned consultants with extensive industrial experience, EC Compliance created a training academy to help participants confidently tackle export control regulations and stay ahead of the game. Clients build a solid regulatory foundation within their organisations through tailored education for all relevant departments, reducing costly operational delays and minimising the risks of financial penalties or blocked deliveries.
The academy’s half-day course lays the foundation for export control awareness with a fresh perspective. Participants gain more than a standard introduction. They uncover hidden compliance risks, unravel complex regulations and give a clear understanding of the export control process. They walk away with a deeper knowledge of the stakes and strategies.
From mastering the nuances of International Traffic in Arms Regulations and Export Administration Regulations to navigating dual-use requirements, the sessions empower participants to break down complex concepts into manageable insights, equipping them with the skills to identify risks, streamline procedures, and comply with clarity.
The academy also places a strong emphasis on practical training, enabling participants to develop a solid foothold in critical areas such as classification, licensing and managing the ripple effects of extraterritorial regulations. The hands-on sessions immerse participants in real-world scenarios with the added advantage of EC Compliance’s proprietary software. Participants learn how to optimise workflows, enabling them to apply their knowledge with impact and precision the moment they step back into their roles.
The academy’s customised training addresses clients’ specific export control challenges. The training delivers actionable insights that are directly applicable to their day-to-day operations, helping them minimise compliance risks. On-site workshops and virtual sessions offer personalised programs that empower teams to transform compliance into a competitive edge.
Partnering for Progress
A cornerstone of EC Compliance’s success is its strong support from French authorities, including the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Economy. Their involvement emphasises the strategic importance of EC Manager to equip French companies with cutting-edge tools for global compliance.
Governmental backing not only elevates the software’s reputation but reinforces its role in simplifying export procedures, mitigating risks and driving secure international trade. By making compliance a catalyst for economic growth, EC Manager empowers many small businesses to confidently navigate global markets.
