Big data has so many different uses and benefits for every industry, from e-commerce to healthcare. Without big data to help guide decision making, companies could be considered deaf and blind. The use of big data will continue to grow throughout 2018, and many companies are offering their services through big data analysis. Headquartered in Athens, Greece, DTWISE is one such organization that uses big data analysis to help enterprises manage their energy efficiency.

DTWISE services help their clients to be more efficient, by allowing them to view multiple sites, and create benchmarks showing which sites are performing at optimum levels, and which need intervention. Their full-stack solution implements the necessary protocols and drivers needed for any smart device, collects the data, buffers it (when offline) and pushes the data to the platform through a secure channel, where analysis provides the end user with actionable insights and visualisations.

The software can also provide real-time alerts via email, SMS or Push Notifications. This means that an engineer becomes immediately aware of an issue, and the alert sent contains a lot of information, such as maps and insights. The platform will also pattern match to enable more complex event alerts. If, for example, the energy production should produce a bell-shaped chart which doesn’t match the expected pattern, an efficiency deficit alert will be created. This can be annotated, so the user can see if there were any events, such as maintenance, that would have impacted the predicted pattern.

DTWISE has helped many companies reduce their energy bills, by analysing the data, and digging into the behaviour of the site. In one case, they saved an aluminium recycling plant 18% on their energy bills by lowering the general load and evening the usage out through the three plant shifts. This was done by analysing the startup sequence and optimising it, as well as implementing other changes in site behaviour.

Tzovairis says that these positive results have not come without their challenges. He says, “The biggest challenge is that there’s no standard way to search every corner of Big Data. You might need to transform data, or write code, or choose between drop-down menus, and there may not be the option in the drop-down menu that you need. We needed to enable the energy engineer to give feedback to the customer and to the developer. We are continually improving our service through reading customer data, and creating an easy to understand and use search language for Big Data, which has been also tested in the domain of harmonic filtering by US industrial service providers for crucial energy cost saving interventions.”

In the future, DTWISE will be preparing to showcase their innovations and their latest partnerships with Greek Utilities, which use a customized version of their WiseWatch application, at the European Utility Week in Vienna, and beyond that, they are growing their customer base. They are planning to expand into the European market, and into domestic, residential use cases. In terms of their technology, they will continue to work on their powerful search language, AI functionality, and power disaggregation.
