Driving Informed Decision-Making with Virtual Twins

Virtual twins are changing how organisations approach product development, engineering and complex decision-making. These advanced digital representations allow teams to model products, processes and systems, run simulations and explore different scenarios before committing resources to physical development. By bringing design data, scientific models and real-world conditions into a virtual environment, organisations can test ideas earlier, identify potential issues and make more informed decisions.

Dassault Systèmes helps businesses connect the physical and virtual worlds to develop smarter products and systems. Its science-based virtual twin experiences bring together modelling, simulation, data and collaboration to support innovation across industries, from improving everyday products and transforming cities to advancing medicine and industrial development.

Connecting Design with Execution

Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform brings design, simulation, data and collaboration into a shared environment. Its AI system supports the creation of virtual twin experiences that combine three-dimensional models with scientific simulation and real-world information, allowing teams to examine scenarios before committing physical resources. That connection gives engineers and business stakeholders a common reference point while keeping experimentation close to the realities of production and use.

For businesses, distinctive enterprise intelligence is usually buried in design history and scattered across disconnected tools. Locating and surfacing that information only solves half the puzzle. 3DEXPERIENCE turns scattered enterprise knowledge into a structured asset that teams can find, trust and reuse. It also supports cloud-based access and collaboration, allowing geographically distributed teams to work from shared information. The result is a model-centric workflow in which decisions, simulations and accumulated knowledge can remain connected throughout development.
Further contributing to product development is the company’s simulation software, SIMULIA. It provides advanced engineering simulation for organisations that need to understand how products and systems will behave before physical testing. For automotive, aerospace, electronics and industrial equipment manufacturers, it can offer valuable insights into structural mechanics, computational fluid dynamics, electromagnetics and multibody dynamics. Engineers can test loads, fluid behaviour, thermal conditions and electromagnetic effects digitally during product development.

Dassault Systèmes combines AI and data science with product lifecycle management information to help teams identify patterns, explore scenarios and make decisions using a broader base of organisational knowledge. The strategic implication is significant. AI becomes part of an existing engineering and operational context rather than a separate application searching for isolated data. That gives enterprises a route towards more informed decision-making while retaining the scientific models and domain knowledge that underpin industrial engineering.

Where Digital Models Meet Reality

The utility of Dassault Systèmes’ virtual twin capabilities can be understood when the technology is examined against engineering realities. Integrating the 3DEXPERIENCE platform helped Raphe mPhibr reduce a development cycle that would typically take years to three months. The company used the platform to connect design, simulation and manufacturing considerations during development.

A different application emerged at Laboratoires M&L, part of the L’OCCITANE Group, where virtual twins were used to examine factory ergonomics and workplace conditions. The company created a virtual twin of its production facility and lines to examine workplace ergonomics, airflow, pathogen propagation and thermal conditions using Dassault Systèmes technologies, including DELMIA and SIMULIA. The project allowed situations that were difficult to observe directly to be modelled and tested digitally. It also evolved from a focused workplace initiative into a broader effort to use the virtual factory for future production planning and investment decisions.

In the construction space, BOXXCRAFT used Dassault Systèmes’ cloud technology to create virtual twins for complex building projects, including the renovation of a historic New York townhouse. The virtual model enabled the project team to test whether an elliptical staircase could accommodate ducts, plumbing and wiring within a highly constrained structure before installation. Multiple stakeholders could access a shared representation of the project, review design decisions and examine constructability. The application shows how the same underlying principles can translate from industrial engineering into a sector where physical rework can be particularly disruptive.

Dassault Systèmes’ virtual twin technology is not confined to one product category or one stage of development. The company currently reports more than 390,000 customers across 159 countries and 12 industries, illustrating the breadth of the ecosystem in which the platform operates. The common thread is the use of shared models, simulation and data to make complex decisions earlier and with greater context.

Virtual twin solutions become more valuable when they carry knowledge from design into manufacturing and from production into real-world operation. This allows data and experience to inform subsequent decisions rather than disappearing once a project moves into its next phase. Over time, this creates a more detailed picture of how products and systems work, giving organisations a stronger basis for optimisation, knowledge reuse and future development.

The significance of Dassault Systèmes’ approach lies less in the visual appeal of 3D models and more in what those models enable organisations to do. Its applications show that the model can move from engineering workstations into factories, construction sites and other complex environments where uncertainty carries tangible consequences.

Dassault Systèmes’ approach goes beyond creating virtual representations. Through the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, enterprises can connect those models with simulation, data, AI and collaboration to create working environments for testing scenarios and informing real-world decisions. That combination supports the company’s recognition as the Top Enterprise Virtual Twin Platform 2026.
