OCTOBER 2019CIOAPPLICATIONSEUROPE.COM6EditorialNetwork Convergence: A New Step towards a Smarter CityCities are transforming digitally to improve financial, environmental, and social aspects of urban life by utilising smart initiatives combined with technology investments. Moving beyond just smarter things and connected infrastructure, the smart cities of tomorrow engage citizens, governments, businesses, and visitors in an intelligent, connected ecosystem -- the goal: higher quality of life and better city services. Although the focus of cities remains the same--creating livable environments where people and businesses can thrive--the ways to achieve that goal are evolving. From security to revenue generation to convenience, smart city applications will alter the way cities operate and the way we work and live. But it all starts with connectivity residents, systems, vehicles, and applications must be connected, and in most cases that involves fibre infrastructure. In order to avoid upgrading networks in the future, city planners are now concerned about future possibilities, and they are consulting with network connectivity and IoT vendors to develop a plan for the long term. Wireless infrastructure is becoming more centralised, so it makes more sense to converge all the wireless backhaul traffic onto the same fibre used by wireline services. Primarily, the development of enabling technologies, user demand, and service providers' capabilities drive the process of fibre network convergence. Large incumbent service providers have both wireless and wireline operations, so maximising asset utilisation and converging onto a single network make excellent business sense and will be a giant push for 2019. Cities are implementing smart city applications because they reduce costs, improve efficiency, generate new sources of revenue, and most importantly, improve the lives of their citizens. In 2019 cities will move forward on the path to becoming smarter by planning, converging networks around citywide fibre rollouts, and using creative funding approaches.Let us know your thoughts!Joe PhillipManaging Editoreditor@cioapplicationseurope.comJoe PhillipCopyright © 2019 ValleyMedia, Inc.
