NOVEMBER 2018CIOAPPLICATIONSEUROPE.COM6NOVEMBER - 01 - 2018ROBOTICS SPECIALEditorialRedefining the Way Industry FunctionsThe reach of robotics is penetrating into many new and old industries that its possible applications far exceed our imagination. Be it manufacturing, healthcare, entertainment, or aerospace and more, robotics has and will have a role to play in bettering the industry operations. Robots are relieving humans from jobs that are difficult, dull, dangerous, and even dirty such as working on oil rigs, manual welding, scraping sewers, fighting wildfires, and many more, thereby increasing human and environmental safety. As the development and adoption of innovative technologies gain velocity, robotics is triggering the manifestation of man's futuristic ideas. For instance, we have hands-free multi-lingual speech translation; rise-assist and personal mobility robots for patient care; and next-generation e-cockpit and millimeter-wave radar for safer driving. However, a growing insecurity plagues the industry that robotics portend the end of human employment. An opposing view justifies robotics calling it an answer to human labor shortage due to aging and unemployed populations. Despite the dissent, the key point not to miss is how robotics is rejuvenating outdated operations and enabling industries to benefit from more efficient, economical, and future-oriented solutions. Robotics solution providers are developing medical, industrial, military, entertainment, hobby robots and many more, aimed at a more disruptive humane work environment with industrial efficiency. Taking a cue from fiction, as robotics is creating smarter machines, it is definitely essential to monitor and prepare for developments in the field to assure security from misuse and unthought-of anomalies that advancements in this amorphous field may bring. Overall, the developing robotics arena is amazingly promising for it can not only advance current processes, but also invent novel solutions and methodologies to help the world altogether.
