NOVEMBER 2018CIOAPPLICATIONSEUROPE.COM6NOVEMBER - 01 - 2018HPC SPECIALEditorialThe Much-needed Computational Boost The dearth for computation power continues to grow as newer and more sophisticated innovations are added to technological world. Virtual Reality is one of the simplest of examples substantiating this proposition, where a 1080p Video at 60 FPS on a traditional monitor needs to be rendered twice in order to deliver seamless performance on a Virtual Reality console. Though this is just a typical scenario that highlights the need for greater computational power over conventional workstations, High Performance Computing has evolved into a standalone industry on its own, paving the way for solution providers to deliver the much-needed computation boost.Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) recently reported gross revenue of 4.2 billion dollars through their HPC offerings, boasting a market share of 34 percent; the statistics showcase the exponential growth of the HPC sector and the demand for higher computation power. Furthermore, the industry diversifies into on-premise and cloud-based solutions, offering enterprises the flexibility of choosing the optimal solutions that not only suffice business requirements but also allow them to scale computational infrastructures based on the type of workstations they use. As a result, organizations resorting to big data analysis and machine learning capabilities to orchestrate their solution and service portfolio can largely benefit from HPC solutions providers to deliver speeds equivalent to a teraflops or 10^12 floating-point operations per second. Along similar lines, vendors have started offering HPC-as-a-Service, coupled with native software that delivers the necessary computation power, which one would not obtain from a traditional workstation.Identifying such promising HPC solution providers, the editorial board of CIO Applications Europe has compiled insights of industry leaders, along with a portfolio of solutions and services from leading organizations. In our assessment, we recognized vendors' capabilities to fulfill the need of cost-effective and efficient HPC solutions that add value to a myriad of industries.Let us know your thoughts.Joe PhillipManaging Editoreditor@cioapplicationseurope.comJoe PhillipCopyright © 2018 ValleyMedia, Inc.
