MARCH 2019CIOAPPLICATIONSEUROPE.COM6MARCH - 05 - 2019AUTOMOTIVE TECHNOLOGY SPECIALEditorialUshering the Next Revolution in Automotive IndustryFrom the wooden-wheeled carts driven by horses around 3200 BC to modern alloy-wheeled cars powered by IC and electric engines, the automotive arena has come a long way forward in advancing travel. Irrespective of the age, vehicles have not only reduced the time taken to travel long distances, but they have also enhanced the comfort of travellers. Today, the use of advanced technologies such as cloud, IoT, and AI has improved the travel experience to unprecedented heights. In their vision to deliver a more immersive travel experience, OEMs rely on automotive solution providers. A significant advancement in this regard has been the heads up displays inside the cars which notify the drivers about the traffic congestions, better routes, and more in the area so that they can enjoy a journey without getting affected by the traffic conditions. Additionally, some of these systems also notify the commuters about the significant regions of attractions in the area such as those for sightseeing, hotels, pubs, and more. They also leverage the data from the commuters' personal devices such as mobile phones and tablets to come up with suggestions that are tailor-made for them.Road safety is another aspect that technological advancements have been able to address. One of the key examples of this is the driver override systems. Most vehicles that are available today have incorporated within them technologies that would apply brakes and disengage gas pedal automatically even if the driver forgets to do so in panic situations. With countries looking to make their roads safer, vehicles that leverage these technologies could make future roads safer not just for passengers but even for pedestrians. The rapid developments in various fields of technology have made today's cars faster, safer, and more comfortable than their earlier counterparts. With more research going on in areas such as AI, big data, and IoT, driverless cars are on the anvil.
