EditorialTurning the Corner for an Uninteresting SectorNot being a sector to have typically generated palpable excitement, enterprise communications is often dismissed as slow to innovate, given its high capital costs to deploy new infrastructure and natural monopolies. Since the plumbing is never as exciting as the fixtures in an enterprise, people end up spending more time noticing what communications can enable than how it can be delivered. This bias, however, is now outdated, largely because technology has taken the lead in an industry that was previously hardware-centric. Enterprises are beginning to make use of all the great integrations that are possible with cloud communications. Furthermore, workflow and analytics has also found application in this sector. Tools can now be developed to give exact advice to a sales rep about when and how to contact customers or to automatically log Salesforce data when a call is completed. As enterprises comfortable with using enterprise communications platforms look forward to manifesting their existing capabilities, APIs come into play. With no further worries about confronting massive capital outlays or marshalling teams of developers, APIs can help enterprises scale up the existing communications capabilities with ease. While today's customers seek an experience that is not only personalised but relevant, contextual communications or CPaaS (communications platform-as-a-service) is also coming into light. By offering innovative, developer-friendly communication APIs, this technology allows enterprises to deliver on today's customer expectations in an omnichannel world. With contextual communications, enterprises can tap a customer's intent, physical location, and social presence to better understand their needs, eliminating points of friction in their experience. Alongside so many other forms of technology, AI is poised to transform enterprise communications in the very near future. Enterprises are already deploying chatbots in messaging apps to assist customers on-demand, on their preferred channels, and at any second of the day. Smart APIs are also enabling the real-time translation of languages from across the globe, fostering innovations that have strictly been science fiction into the present day. Given that communications is one of the largest portions of enterprise IT budgets, we see a bright future for even more solution providers building on the macro trend of making enterprise communications more accessible and productive. In this edition of CIOApplications Europe, we bring to you some of the leading companies that have excelled through innovation in delivering the enterprise communications solutions.
