EditorialCapitalising on 5G TechnologiesAmong various advancements in the telecommunications industry, fifth-generation (5G) technologies are poised to gain ground quickly and will help unleash the full potential of augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), smart cities, and the internet of things (IoT). Hence, it is critical that as telecom companies invest in new technologies, they must devise business strategies and models for monetising 5G and other emerging opportunities. Once available, 5G will not only create numerous business opportunities but also provide an ideal environment for telecom companies to employ `network slicing' to customise their offerings. Network slicing will enable sharing of a given physical network to implement IoT, mobile broadband, and other low-latency applications such as connected-car and connected-home functions, resulting in entirely new revenue sources.Even before the rollout of 5G technologies, telecom companies must focus on astutely pricing their internet plans to reap the maximum benefits of the insatiable appetite for mobile data among today's consumers. However, a customer-centric approach in this regard, which includes lower prices, unlimited data plans, and a variety of bundled services, has led to an overall decrease in the average revenue per user (ARPU). As a consequence, to balance the competitive landscape as well as boost revenue, telecom companies are looking to expand their boundaries. For instance, with an increasing number of consumers who now prefer video streaming services over cable subscriptions, telecom companies will likely consider mergers and acquisitions to integrate content and media into their offerings. As 5G technologies, coupled with changing market conditions and consumer preferences, are expected to create significant revenue sources, telecom companies must be equipped with effective technology solutions to capitalise on every new business opportunity. To assist companies in selecting solutions that best address their business requirements, this edition of CIOApplications Europe features a list of promising telecom solution/service providers in Europe.Do let us know your thoughts.Joe PhillipManaging Editoreditor@cioapplicationseurope.comJoe PhillipCopyright © 2019 ValleyMedia, Inc.
