DECEMBER 2020CIOAPPLICATIONSEUROPE.COM6EditorialGoing Beyond Traditional Storage ApproachesFor decades, storage technology progress was measured primarily in terms of capacity and speed. In recent times, however, those steadfast benchmarks have been augmented and superseded by sophisticated new technologies and methodologies that make storage smarter, more flexible, and easier to manage. Storage technology has made major shifts to an all-flash, AI-driven, software-defined, and automated model to better manage data protection systems. A growing number of enterprises are seriously considering a transition to software-defined storage (SDS) because of the benefits it offers in terms of automation, increased storage capacity, improved staff efficiency, and flexibility. SDS systems virtualise the available storage resources while also providing a simplified storage management interface that represents different storage pools as a unified storage resource. At the same time, non-volatile memory express (NVMe) is making waves, particularly as an alternative to SCSI-based interfaces designed to take advantage of flash media and next-generation solid-state technologies like storage class memory (SCM). More and more NVMe are taking over SAS- and SATA-based SSDs and even watch for NVMe to make the leap from back end to the front end. The initial adoption of NVMe over RDMA-enabled Ethernet networks, known as NVMe over Fabrics, is starting to drive significant shifts in data speed and efficiency. Ethernet storage fabric is evolving as well. Ethernet storage fabrics can now support converged, hyperconverged, software-defined, scale-out, and distributed storage as well as NVMe over fabrics, making storage network modernisation more attractive than ever. Alongside, we can expect a surge in software-defined storage and a push for simplicity, mainly through the adoption of hyperconvergence, which has been rapidly spreading across the storage industry. In this edition of CIOApplications Europe, we bring you the story of some of the most successful data storage solution providers that deliver the best outcomes for their clients.
