Contentful Secures USD 80 Million in Series E Round of Financing
Contentful CEO Steve Sloan attributes the company's success to the fact that virtually every business today is figuring out how to become digital and serve its customers across platforms, a process that has only been accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic
Fremont, CA: Berlin-based headless content management systems provider, Contentful, raised USD 80 million in a Series E round of financing led by Sapphire Ventures, with participation from General Catalyst, Salesforce Ventures, and five other new and existing backers. The latest round of funding takes the company's total raised capital to USD 158 million. Contentful will use proceeds from the newest series to scale operations and its business reach.
“Since pioneering headless CMS six years ago, Contentful has been transforming how companies manage and deploy content across all of their properties,” says Andreas Weiskam of Sapphire Ventures, which also led the company’s Series D round. “As consumers access digital content across more channels, legacy CMS suites are unable to support the demand.” The German content platform has an API-first approach that allows developers, designers, and content managers to create and deliver digital experiences for any channel or device. The company claims big-name customers such as Spotify, Aldo, The British Museum, Bang & Olufsen and Lenovo, and partners with over 300 digital agencies such as Publicis Sapient, Huge and Valtech.
Contentful CEO Steve Sloan attributes the company's success to the fact that virtually every business today is figuring out how to become digital and serve its customers across platforms, a process that has only been accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic. “Ten or 15 years ago, when these content platforms or content management systems were created, they were a) really built for a web-only world and b) where the website was a complement to some other business,” he said.
Along with the investment round, the company also announced the hiring of Bridget Perry as their new CMO, who most recently led Adobe marketing across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Contentful's cloud-native, API-first platform has attracted a community of more than 400,000 developers and users who integrate Contentful with other third-party services such as Cloudinary, Commercetools, and Smartling to extend the capabilities of the platform. With the recent release of its app framework, a new community of technology partners now offers integrations with Contentful.
